Wilen named acting UC IPM director
Kassim Al-Khatib, who has been the UC IPM director since 2009, is transitioning to a UC Cooperative Extension specialist position located in the Department of Plant Sciences in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at UC Davis. This move will allow him to focus on his research in weed management.
Wilen is also leader of the Endemic and Invasive Pests and Diseases (EIPD) strategic initiative. Based in San Diego, she will continue to serve as the area integrated pest management advisor for the turf, ornamental and nursery industries in Orange, Los Angeles and San Diego counties. Last summer, Wilen served as acting director for the IPM program while Al-Khatib was on sabbatical leave on a Fulbright Scholarship in Turkey.

UC IPM program is a 2010 'IPM Innovator'
The UC Integrated Pest Management Program is among the organizations to be honored by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation as 2010 "IPM Innovators," according to a DPR news release.
The annual honor is presented to businesses and organizations for their efforts to control insects, weeds, rodents and other pests with a combination of natural and preventive strategies and pesticides less toxic than traditional treatments.
DPR Director Mary-Ann Warmerdam will present the IPM Innovator Awards at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Sierra Hearing Room on the second floor of the California Environmental Protection Agency building in Sacramento.
The UC IPM award is shared with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The two organizations defined and clarified effective IPM practices for a wide range of commodities and provided stakeholders with this information and incentives to increase their adoption and implementation, the news release said.
Examples of the partnership’s efforts include development of year-round IPM programs for 19 different crops. These programs help to reduce pesticides in water runoff and volatile organic compound pesticide emissions that contribute to smog.
ANR Building modular addition project approved
Dear Colleagues,
Last week, Senior VP Dan Dooley approved the initial phase of a project to design, estimate cost, and build a modular building adjacent to the existing ANR Building on Hopkins Road in Davis. The building will house the Research and Extension Centers - Administrative Office (REC-AO), Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), Risk Services, the Statewide IPM Program (IPM), and Communication Services and Information Technology (CSIT).
The need for this facility is driven by a number of factors. First, to reduce facilities costs, UC Davis authorities have been relocating units housed in off-campus leased space to campus facilities. For CSIT, that was going to mean relocation to at least three different structures on campus and the loss of studio, technology infrastructure, and other production facilities. As the lease for the space CSIT currently occupies was to expire late this summer, the need to relocate that unit has been compelling. Additionally, elements of IPM have been in separate locations, one of which is significantly sub-standard.
More importantly, establishing a single location for major administrative, support and programmatic units of ANR will prove essential to improving administrative efficiency and to capitalizing on our new administrative structure and on new common collaborative tools and technologies to support it.
ANR plans to support this project primarily with funds that are restricted to use on capital projects and facilities. Moreover, the planned 18,000 sq ft facility, estimated to cost approximately $2.8 million, will provide a permanent home to key ANR units and, within a relatively short period of time, save both ANR and the UC Davis campus significant lease, improvement, relocation and infrastructure expenses. This project will be funded without impacting current operating budgets and resources, academic recruitments, or funding for our Strategic Initiatives.
While no construction on this project will begin before we have a state budget, we must move ahead with the project planning to be ready when we do. This project will use modular construction technologies that provide functional space at low cost and very short construction times. The UC Davis facilities staff has conducted preliminary analysis of this project and agrees on its potential long-term benefits to both ANR and UCD.
REC-AO, EH&S, Risk Services, IPM, and CSIT will remain in their current locations until they can relocate to the new building projected to be ready by early 2012.
We have long wanted to expand the ANR Building and the current construction economy and significantly improved modular construction technologies make this project possible, affordable and desirable.Kay Harrison Taber

Garden blog features IPM website
The blog "Good Life Garden," developed as part of the UC Davis Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science, plugged the UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management website in its most recent "Website Wednesday" feature.
The Good Life Garden itself is an edible landscape in the Mondavi Institute courtyard featuring organic and sustainably grown vegetables, herbs and flowers. Together with the blog of the same name, the garden was designed to educate the public on growing, buying and preparing good tasting and nutritious fresh food.
The blog entry said that last February a pest was found on the bottom of a cabbage leaf. The garden manager turned to the IPM website and found a detailed description that matched the pest, the cabbageworm.
"Voila!" the blog says. "We have a cabbageworm and now know the best way to manage them is by handpicking. Now that was easy!"
The blog also invited readers to post a picture of a pest they can't identify on the Good Life Garden's Facebook page. A question on the page about earwigs refers to an IPM Pest Note on the topic.
Cabbageworm.
