Datasets help define stakeholder needs and significance of research, education and extension

Community-based demographic, environmental, economic, social and health data can help us better understand the 40 million people we serve. Whether you are drafting technical reports or applying for grant funding, you may find datasets useful to define stakeholder need and significance of research, education and extension impacts when communicating with potential partners, sponsors and advocates.

Rural County Representatives of California recently released Rural County Representatives of California, Economic and Demographic Profiles. These data sources provide demographic, environmental, economic, social and industry data by county.

County-level profiles can also inform decisions on how best to develop programs and initiatives that benefit farmers and ranchers, strengthen regional food systems and protect natural resources.

The following are just a few more examples of county-level profile datasets that may support your efforts as UC ANR academics and programmatic staff: 

• California Department of Education - DataQuest
  Data on school performance, test results, school staffing, graduation and dropout rates.

• California Department of Finance County Profiles
  Economic, social, and demographic data at the state and county level.

• California Department of Public Health - County Health Status Profiles
  Data for selected health indicators and California's leading causes of death.

• California Department of Public Health – Local Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Community Profiles
  County profiles designed to provide data on the health and environment (community, home and school) of California mothers, babies, children and teens.

• California Department of Public Health – Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program County Profiles
  Data on CalFresh eligibility demographics, food insecurity rates, and nutrition.

• California Employment Development, Labor Market Information Demographic Profile - California and Counties
  Profile data including age, race/ethnicity, sex, household type and relationship, housing occupancy, and social and economic data, such as income, poverty and labor force.

• California Environmental Public Health Tracking
  A variety of health and environmental data.

• California Food Policy Advocates Nutrition & Food Insecurity Profile
  Data on County-level poverty rates and food insecurity.

• California Healthy Communities Data and Indicators Project
  Demographic and community health data to support planning healthy communities and evaluating the impact of plans, projects, policy, and environmental changes on community health.

  Managed by U.S. General Services Administration, Technology Transformation Service, datasets provide access to agriculture, climate, consumer, ecosystem, education, energy, finance, health and local government data.

  Commodity and industry data by county and region.

  County-level data for life expectancy, mortality rates, obesity prevalence and recommended physical activity levels.

UC contractors and vendors must comply with fair wage plan

As described in Human Resources' Oct. 14, ANR Update email, the UC Fair Wage/Fair Work Plan became effective Oct. 1, 2015. It is important to note that the plan applies not only to UC personnel, but also to contractors/vendors doing business with and providing services to UC. The UC Fair Wage/Fair Work Plan also provides measures to ensure contractor compliance including a dedicated telephone hotline (1-855-WAGES-UC) and webpage by which contract workers may report complaints directly to the Office of the President.

As the first university in the country to voluntarily set a minimum wage, compliance with this requirement will be scrutinized carefully. To ensure compliance, effective immediately it is imperative that UC ANR personnel do not allow contractors and/or vendors to perform work or provide services to UC ANR unless and until a properly authorized UC agreement is in place. (Common types of UC ANR work or services that are subject to the Fair Wage policy include repair services, farm labor contractor services, agricultural services, construction services, etc.)

UC policy has always required that an authorized UC purchase order (or other appropriate form of contract) be executed before work begins. With the implementation of the UC Fair Wage/Fair Work Plan, however, it is critical that UC ANR obtain services only from firms that will execute a contract guaranteeing payment of the plan's minimum wage, as described in UC's factsheet. Accordingly, the vendor's willingness to do this must be confirmed prior to the start of work.

Allowing work to proceed before an appropriately authorized UC purchase order is issued will be considered a breach of UC policy (an unauthorized purchase), and is very likely to trigger new/additional administrative requirements, cause delay and impede payment to the vendor.

Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Workshop April 10

The ANR Office of Contracts & Grants and the UC Davis Innovation Access Office will present an Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer workshop on Thursday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

ANR Contracts & Grants and UC Davis Innovation Access work together to support the continuum of innovation at ANR – from developing a new research project with a sponsor to protecting new inventions and transferring technologies to industry partners for commercializing in the marketplace.

This workshop will explain your rights, as a UC employee, under UC Patent Policy, and will detail the technology transfer process for new inventions. It will also explain why Intellectual Property language in research agreements is important and how it can have implications lasting after the research project is concluded.

Presenters include:

UC Cooperative Extension county directors, advisors, specialists and other interested ANR faculty and staff should attend. Specialists based at UC Berkeley or UC Riverside are encouraged to participate and will find this workshop very helpful even though they use the Technology Transfer Offices on their respective campuses for invention reporting. 

The workshop will be held in the San Joaquin Valley Conference Room of the ANR Building at 2801 Second Street in Davis.

The deadline for providing input on how ANR’s reorganized administrative functions and units are working for you has been extended to Friday, Nov. 18.
