President Drake’s message on the anniversary of George Floyd’s murder
May 24, 2021
Dear friends,
Tomorrow marks one year since the murder of George Floyd. We pause to reflect on and honor his memory, and the countless others who have been maimed or killed by forces of oppression and bigotry during our nation's long history. The pernicious effects of racism have altered the course of our country from before its founding, and persist in ways large and small to this very day.
This past year in particular – with international public reckoning over racial injustice, and the disproportionate public health and economic impacts of the pandemic on people of color – leaves us keenly aware of the challenges we face in returning to a forever altered world. It also reminds us of the requirement that we engage our best selves in the work necessary to create a better, more respectful, more inclusive tomorrow.
The solutions to the structural flaws that plague our nation will require us to work collectively to imagine, and then create, the future we all deserve. We long to be that place, to quote the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high.” A place where we can all realize our full human potential.
As a university community, we can do our part to exemplify best practices and commit ourselves to lead. I applaud the many actions taken by people across the University, from anti-racism work to efforts to address basic needs and much more. So many of our students, faculty, and staff have devoted themselves to this effort, and are working every day to put the University of California on a better path forward. Our work is far from finished; our efforts will not be in vain.
Sincerely,
Michael V. Drake

President Drake 's message about this week's election
Dear Colleagues,
Please read the letter below from President Drake about tomorrow's presidential election. During these trying times, I strongly agree with his call to remember our shared UC community values. We are here because we care about the mission we deliver, no matter the results of the election, we will continue to deliver our mission and serve all Californians. If you haven't voted yet, I hope you will make time to do so.
Best wishes,

Dear friends,
A presidential election is always a significant event for the country; conducting one in the middle of a global pandemic, and as the nation confronts systemic racism, only heightens the far-reaching impacts of electoral outcomes.
We are living through a time of much turmoil and anxiety, with strong emotions and views all along the political spectrum being expressed. In times like these, I find it helpful to lean on what has guided us through past challenges: our core community values of respect, equity, and inclusion. We cherish the free exchange of ideas and views — including views that differ from our own — and the right to peaceful protest. We believe in making decisions based on facts and data. And we support vulnerable populations, including the undocumented community. These are bedrock values for UC and won't change.
By now, many of you have already exercised your right to vote. Thank you for making your voice heard. The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy, and something we should never take for granted.
If you are eligible to vote but haven't done so yet, it's not too late! You can learn about same-day voter registration, find your polling place, and get information about what's on your ballot here.
We are all here at UC because we want a better future for ourselves and our communities. No matter the results of the election, we will continue to move forward – together.

Energy emergency, President Drake, Town Hall reminder
Energy emergency
On August 16, Governor Newsom signed an emergency proclamation designed to free up energy capacity and reduce the need for temporary energy service disruptions amid the record-breaking heat wave.
I join Secretary Karen Ross and other officials around the state in asking every Californian to please shift energy use outside of the hours of 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and to conserve energy in every way during those hours. Three simple actions individuals and businesses can take to reduce energy consumption include setting your thermostat to 78° or higher, refraining from major appliance use and turning off unnecessary lights and appliances.
We are mindful that this is a critical harvesting and processing time for agriculture. The order waives requirements to allow use of backup generators to take pressure off the grid from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Thank you for your help in reducing energy use and communicating this important message to your clients and stakeholders.

Town Hall reminder

Celebration corner
Clean, safe water is critical to public health. Doug Parker and Faith Kearns created a new California Institute for Water Resources webpage in April with resources for water safety, water use and water supply issues related to COVID-19, including numerous multilingual resources. The page is continually updated with new resources.

Introducing UC President-designate Dr. Michael V. Drake
Dear UC Colleagues,
As Chair of the Board of Regents, I am delighted to share with you that Michael V. Drake, MD, will become the 21st President of the University of California.
Dr. Drake, former Chancellor of UC Irvine and Vice President of UC Health Affairs, returns to the University of California after having served with great distinction since 2014 as the President of The Ohio State University.
As I noted to my colleagues on the Board, I believe Dr. Drake personifies the qualities we looked for in selecting a new President: he is committed to seeing the whole student and to supporting all our students, he recognizes the incalculable value of faculty and staff to the University's mission, and he understands the importance of the public and private partnerships that help us achieve that mission.
These qualities dovetail with the priorities we heard from the UC community during the selection process, a thorough 10-month long nationwide search that included broad consultation with faculty, students, staff and alumni as well as soliciting an unprecedented amount of public input. More information on the search process can be located here.
As the first person of color to serve as UC President, Dr. Drake arrives at an important point in the University's journey. From my own discussions with him, I am confident Dr. Drake is the right leader to build upon UC's educational and research excellence and to advance the University's goal to serve all segments of society as an engine of economic and social mobility.
I will have the honor of introducing President-designate Drake to the UC community during a special, livestreamed conversation at 11:30 a.m. (PDT) on July 10 that can be accessed here. I hope you can join us as we begin inaugurating this exciting new era at UC.
Fiat Lux,
John A. Pérez
